SOLARIS XS86 SOLUTIONS
SOFTWARE AG 4GL and RDBMS for Solaris x86
SOFTWARE AG is now offering a number of its key products for the
Solaris(TM) x86 software environment, to enable the implementation
of scalable, distributed client/server solutions in heterogeneous
corporate network environments. Designed to offer high reliability
and ease of use, these open, flexible products take full advantage
of the 32-bit multithreading and multiprocessing attributes of the
Solaris environment.
Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS): ADABAS,(R) widely
recognized as the premiere mainframe RDBMS, now adds
interoperability across multiple UNIX(R) platforms. ADABAS
supports virtually every data model, and its open architecture
accommodates new technologies as they arise. ADABAS protects
customers' existing investments in platforms, services and
applications, requiring no additional personnel training to move
applications and data to new platforms.
Application Development: NATURAL(R) is a production-oriented 4GL
development environment that enables specification of data, forms,
reports and logic across a broad spectrum of databases and
operating systems. NATURAL is ideal for large development teams,
for rapid development of high-volume OLTP applications and massive
distributed databases, and for the integration of new and legacy
systems.
Within the NATURAL environment, the PREDICT(TM) integrated data
dictionary allows corporate-wide definition of all data
descriptions, including database, file, elementary field,
application, system, module and report, as well as validation
rules and file relationships. PREDICT allows database
administrators and software developers to easily manage
information about data and programs. And the NATURAL CONSTRUCT(TM)
model-based application generator increases the productivity of
both experienced and entry-level developers. NATURAL CONSTRUCT
automates the scripting of commonly used application components,
allowing the developer to specify object classes or models.
Middleware: ENTIRE NET-WORK(TM) provides a common communication
service for applications, development tools, end-user query tools
and other types of software across heterogeneous networks. ENTIRE
ACCESS(TM) allows applications to work transparently with multiple
RDBMS in both client/server and single-platform environments. It
shields developers and users from having to deal with the
proprietary SQL nuances of different RDBMS vendors. Together,
these middleware products protect customers from the impact of
ever-changing network topologies and database interfaces, and
deliver significant development and maintenance cost savings
compared to programming directly to native services.
A Stable, Open Platform
Solaris x86 is a powerful and versatile software environment for
the Intel(R) x86 platform. Designed as a foundation for enterprise
computing, Solaris x86 provides robust services for both desktop
and server systems. Its multitasking and multithreading
capabilities boost application performance and take full advantage
of the power of 486 and Pentium(TM) PCs, enabling complex
applications to be simultaneously available on the desktop.
Support of key industry standards, including the Motif(R)
graphical user interface and NFS,(R) Sun's distributed computing
file system, increases the power of the desktop by making the
resources of the network (files, printers, applications) easily
accessible, appearing to reside locally.
Solaris servers can integrate easily into existing PC LANs
(including IPX(TM)/SPX-based LANs), providing access to powerful
enterprise applications and data without modifying installed PCs.
Solaris servers can also unite legacy mainframes and PC LANs,
increasing the utility of each. With the same programming
interfaces as Solaris SPARC,(R) Solaris x86 ensures source
compatibility between the leading CISC (x86) and RISC (SPARC)
platforms, giving users the flexibility to deploy applications on
systems ranging from laptops to superservers.
